n. 792 The towers of work II

With its towers aligned as far as the eye can see, this landscape resembles "a labyrinth of wheels, cranks, pulleys and gears in motion ..." (Guy de Maupassant, Le Creusot). The details are precious but without the presence of man, the realm of mechanics seems inanimate. The absence of activity, of "wisps of smoke, puffs of steam, and coal dust" confuses us. Where are you, homo faber? Your big towers are no longer seen in our cities but their memory still makes us dream.
