n. 693 The rise

The tower, as a human construction, takes on a powerful symbolism: a desire to ascend to the sky, an image of power, bold strength, an ideal of beauty... the meanings are numerous, both spiritual and material. In this engraving we see in the foreground a diverse and joyful crowd of people; they converse serenely but observed at the foot of the tower, a ramp welcomes them and like a worm screw accompanies them upwards. The destination of this procession eludes us, the upper floors are lost in the night but the ascent represents, like a perfect metaphor, our passage on earth.
