n.474 The barefoot kings

These operetta characters that the engraver had fun tracing, are a bit ridiculous: they look like little kings sitting in the stages of an imaginary theater. The posture is haughty but their authority falters before the evidence: they are all barefoot!. It is precisely this incongruity that makes them more...human and gives the scene a tragicomic dimension. The texture is rich in light and dark tones; in this world closed in a solemn rigidity, the light diagonals cross the space making it alive.
